Placed under a mesh drapery and lined with gerbera daisies, the four-tier cake made a dramatic focal point. It was half chocolate with mocha chocolate chip cream, and half French vanilla with vanilla cream. The outer layer of frosting had to be fondant so it would hold up in the humidity, but because Theresa is nuts about buttercream, the baker placed a layer of buttercream frosting under the fondant.
Theresa didn‘t want stuffy, ultra-elaborate centerpieces, so she had the florist mix elegant peonies with more casual gerbera daisies in low arrangements; the square centerpiece pots echoed the square dinner tables.
"Our friends love to socialize, so we wanted to create a space where they could kick back when they weren‘t dancing," Theresa says. Two cushy sofas and a few cocktail tables off to one side of the dance floor did the trick.
Picking up on the save-the-date design, the programs were inked in green (for the outdoor setting) and pink (Theresa‘s favorite color) and featured a daisy illustration.
There was no formal altar to mark the outdoor spot where the couple exchanged vows, so the wedding planners hung ribbons with gerbera daisies attached from an old oak tree overhead.
Brays Island Plantation is extremely special to the couple, who would spend romantic weekends there while attending Duke University. "It‘s sort of where we fell in love," Theresa says. "And, it‘s just a gorgeous place, filled with wildlife!" The pair hired a wedding coordinator and gave her these marching orders: Make the event feel laid-back and fun, but also beautiful and traditional enough to satisfy the moms.
Evoking the lush surroundings, Theresa and Jeff placed note cards, pencils, and ribbons next to two topiaries. Guests wrote personal messages to the newlyweds and tied them on the trees.
To make the dance floor feel really festive, the couple created a bit of a nightclub atmosphere. It had a black-and-white checkerboard dance floor, low-slung ottomans for quick between-songs breaks, and pink paper lanterns hanging from the roof of the tent.
He's from Darien, Connecticut, she's from Marin County, California, by way of Georgia, and they currently live in Houston, so of course Theresa Williams and Jeff Eaton chose to get married at...an inn in South Carolina?
